CCR FILM REVIEW
I saw INGLORIOUS BASTERDS recently and totally enjoyed it. It seems like films from the states show up here a bit later/stay in theaters for a longer time so I get to see them even though I missed them when they came out this summer. So this was lucky for me and I wanted to see Tarantinos new movies since last spring. When I finally did I was not disappointed.
BASTERDS is so perfect and really fits in the unique category that Tarantino films always land in. It’s unlike all the other unoriginal WWII movies that come out from time to time. I want to explain why I think this is just perfect story telling, because that’s what’s really interesting for me right now. All Tarantino’s movies impress me because they are well put together. BASTERDS, like KILL BILL VOL. 1 and 2 is told in chapters just like a book. And I think that it presents the perfect way for him to present the big picture in small installments. Each chapter only shows a small snapshot of time but the five different snapshots cover four years of the war. And they are so atypical for a war movie.
To set the stage for a movie about WWII in occupied France, Tarantino doesn’t try and scare the audience by showing lots of guns and bombs and blood and stuff. What he gives is much much much more terrifying. It takes the form of a really scary character who is developed flawlessly but without being violent at all. What makes him scary is just the way he talks and acts and is hard to pinpoint. So really chapter one is just a long conversation and I thought it was so phenomenal. The fourth chapter is similar in that it is a simple scene with lots of complexities. It too is just a long scene with dialogue that seems to carry on forever as tension rises and falls. These parts are just so perfect and make you bite your nails. It’s really impressive.
So mainly what makes it so great is the story telling. And of course the acting goes without saying. There aren’t better actors. Period. So I just can’t get enough of these movies. And now I am starting to understand why. BASTERDS is absurd and violent and terrifying and also alarmingly funny.
