EGYPT DEFEATS ALGERIA (2-0)
The Egyptian National team just narrowly stayed in contention for the 2010 World Cup by defeating Algeria by a margin of 2 goals. Prior to this incredibly important match the Algerian team had a 2 goal lead over Egypt in the qualifying rounds. A defeat tonight or a tie or a win by one goal for Egypt would have guaranteed Algeria a place in the World Cup. Instead the teams will have a tie-breaking game on the 18th in Sudan.
Egypt began the game with an early lead after scoring within the first 5 minutes. However, without needing to win or tie the match, Algeria played strong defence and held the Egyptians to a one point lead into the second half. So many narrow misses from both teams made the game really intense. Egypt then scored a breathtaking goal in stoppage time and the entire country is going wild.
Outside the celebrations keep getting louder. It’s a combination of car horns and explosions coming from fireworks/fires and things. I thought it was incredibly exciting to watch the game, and the best part is another match has to be played later this week! Yet another cause for celebration, that is if Egypt once again wins. I’ll blog about that game too.
